One of the best memories I have of traveling with my family to Minnesota is the dive bar we stopped in for brunch. There was a Bloody Mary bar! It was the coolest thing I had ever seen. They served it alongside a 6oz {mini} bottle of beer.
It took 2 full hands to carry my drink back to the table as I acted as a child, wide-eyed in a candy store, scoping out all the goodies. Pickles, olives, horseradish, hot sauce, celery, sliders(what), you name it, it was on the bar. And it was fabulous. And the beer to go alongside, was the perfect pairing. But what if you put the beer INSIDE the Bloody Mary. Pure genius and that my friends is a michelada!
There are always a few things I require when drinking a Bloody Mary. Lots of pepper, horseradish, liquid smoke and beer. It’s the perfect combination of hot and spicy, cool, refreshing and bubbly! The Clamato® juice tames it all.
I left that delicious dive bar thinking of all the possibilities of Bloody Mary’s I could take home and concoct but since then, to me, nothing is better than the Smokin’ Michelada.
I love a little Mexican beer in my Bloody Mary’s. It adds a little effervesce that is so welcomed and refreshing especially in the heat of the summer. Our Sunday morning ritual, as told here, is waking up and having a Bloody Mary on the deck while reading the Sunday newspaper.
It’s just something we’ve always done and I don’t see any sense in stopping it. Sometimes the Bloody Mary’s last until the afternoon with the addition of a few neighbors, chips, salsa and great conversation. It’s my favorite day of the week and hence, why we’re never without Clamato. I often pick up a bottle {or two} when I’m out shopping at Albertson’s.
Clamato is our tomato juice choice when it comes to Bloody Mary’s and micheladas. We love it because of its perfect balance of tomato juice concentrate, spices and clam broth. Mix it with a Mexican beer and its perfection in the form of a michelada!
While we don’t roll out the Bloody Mary cart for Sundays, we do like to make our micheladas by the pitchers. It’s so much easier when friends come over to already have a stock so they can grab in the fridge and join us on the deck.
What I will say, do not add the beer. Have friends go in, grab a glass, pour the Smokin’ Michelada mixture into a glass ½-3/4 full and then top with beer. You don’t want the beer to sit in the pitcher, in the fridge losing all its carbonation.
Now I will share my delicious and prized recipe with you for these Smokin’ micheladas so you too can entertain your friends with a tasty, spicy and smoky afternoon refresher.

Doesn’t that look like the best Smokin’ michelada you’ve ever seen. The combination of liquid smoke and horseradish is a thing of magic. I love to add both to my meatloaves too. Combined with tomato juice and they’re a match made in foodie Heaven.
Oh, and the blue cheese stuffed olives are a must! We keep the garnishes to a minimum because we like to let the real star shine and that’s the Smokin’ michelada itself. Save the garnishes for your salad. A celery stick, olives and a lime wedge are all you really need.
