Love Moscow Mules? May I suggest a Strawberry Moscow Mule Float or a Cranberry Apple Moscow Mule?
First and foremost, please excuse my long absence. I was on vacation in the lovely state of Wyoming, where we travel to each year to have a huge family reunion, with my dad’s side, and enjoy the mountains, scenery and the Sheridan Wyo Rodeo, Yee-haw! (sorry, I had to). There’s anywhere from 20-25 people crammed into my grandmother’s 4 bedroom, 2 bath house. Chaotic yes, especially in the mornings when it’s shower time, but a lot of fun, oh hellz yes! Love my family to pieces! It’s the one time of year we’re all able to get together because we all live in different states-BOO!
I fully intended on blogging while I was there, but alas it did not happen and for that, I am sorry…well kind of. I mean just look at the view from the Big Horn Mountains. Breathtaking if you ask me. So, while I missed all of you, I also needed a little relaxation away from my crazy, busy, hectic schedule to soak in some much-needed family time and mountain fresh air. I still cooked, baked and photographed while I was there so I didn’t fully leave you hanging. But this little trip was everything I needed to take a life breather.
Now, we’re back, I’m restored and ready to hit the ground running….but first, a cocktail. After all, it is Friday!!
I have been drinking Moscow Mules with my dad for years, I mean WAY before they were trendy. We’d go over to my dad’s house and he asked us what we’d like to drink. On the list of cocktails he could make, with what he had on hand were always Moscow mules. And for me it’s always a toss-up between a Moscow mule and a caipirinha. Ever heard of those? I’ll have a recipe for those for you in the future. They’re delicious and dangerous, my favorite combo.
With Moscow mules being so popular these days, I was chatting with my dad on how we could make them a little different. We’ve soaked pineapples in vodka before to create a Stoli Doli, like the ones they serve in a popular restaurant in town, so we were no stranger to soaking fruit in vodka. With summer being so plentiful of fresh blueberries we decided they would be the perfect little fruit to soak.
Side note, I also have this on my short list of versions to make, Peach Basil Moscow Mule by Whitney Bond of Little Leopard Book. Nothing says summertime more than Peaches and Basil. But let’s get back to the recipe at hand which features blueberries and mint.
We started by soaking 2 pounds of blueberries in 1 handle of vodka (1.75L). We let this mixture sit at room temperature for 1 week so the vodka could fully soak up all the sweet, tartness of the blueberries. The picture above is doubled as we made the blueberry vodka for the reunion in Wyoming. With 15 adults and 6 kids, you need plenty of vodka, for the adults, to go around.
To assemble the Blueberry Moscow mules, start out with a copper mug. While not mandatory, they’re totally necessary to maintain cool status with the trendy, popular Moscow mule loving crowd. Muddle 2-3 mint leaves in the bottom of the mug. Then add ice to your mug. Next, add in 2-3 ounces of blueberry vodka depending on how boozy you’d like it. Squeeze in the juice of 1 lime and top off with ginger beer. Our favorite is Barritts ginger beer (No, I was not compensated to say that, but when you’ve tried as many ginger beers as we have, I felt compelled to share my favorite) Use whatever ginger beer you prefer or have on hand.
Random fact for you. The Moscow Mule was born when a carload of Jack Morgan’s Cock ‘n’ Bull ginger beer was brought to New York in “The decade of War” AKA the 1940’s. So if you’d also like to stay in trend with the 1940’s use Cock ‘n’ Bull ginger beer. The amount of ginger beer will vary depending on the size of your mug.
Another way to use this blueberry vodka would be to swap the black cherry vodka for blueberry vodka in our Berry Basil Lemonade.

If you’ve never tried a Moscow Mule before I encourage you to do so. The zing of the ginger beer paired with the zesty citrus flavor of lime mixed with vodka truly makes for one refreshing drink.
They are very easy to make which also makes them perfect for happy hour.
While this is the classic way to enjoy a Moscow mule, I also encourage you to soak some blueberries in vodka.
You literally throw blueberries into a handle of vodka? Now how easy is that? {Said in my best Ina Garten voice}
Cheers to summertime!
