Like most people, I have a huge bucket list that never becomes any shorter, only longer by the day. One of the places on the top of my bucket list would be to take a trip down to New Orleans. The culture, music and especially the food resonate with me and I think it would be such an incredible place to visit some day.
But because today is not that day, I am bringing you a Muffuletta Sandwich right out of my Midwest kitchen.
As much as I LOVE a muffuletta sandwich I have never made one on my own, until today, and I am so sorry I hadn’t been doing it sooner. because they’re super simple to make and incredibly delicious.
It’s probably taken me this long to make a muffuletta sandwich because my family isn’t a fan of olives. I, on the other hand, love them. But today this sandwich was about me and what I love and I had just picked up a loaf of Pepperidge Farm Farmhouse® Hearty White Bread Hearty White Bread that I knew would be perfect for it.
A classic muffuletta sandwich is made with a crusty round loaf of bread, but this is my version which uses Farmhouse Hearty White Bread. It’s thick sliced, has a fresh from the oven taste and it’s hearty, which I knew would stand up to the olive salad.
There are 3 essentials meats you need when constructing a muffuletta sandwich; mortadella (which took me 3 stores to locate, however, it’s delicious and a must!) sopresatta and capicola.
You also need cheese and I went with a sharp provolone.
Then, you’ll need to make an olive spread. You could also buy some at the store but this recipe is easy and simple.
I used a combination of pitted green and black olives, hot giardiniera, roasted red peppers, capers and a pinch of sugar. Place all of these ingredients in to your food processor and pulse a handful of times. Boom, homemade olive spread.
What I love about Pepperidge Farm Farmhouse Hearty White Bread is how thick the slices are. The olive spread has a good amount of olive so when you place the sandwiches in the fridge to rest, you don’t want all the flavors to seep out.
The Farmhouse Hearty White bread did not disappoint. There was no oil to be seen on the outside of the bread which is a great indication you didn’t lose any flavor!
Now it’s time to build your muffuletta sandwich. Olive spread, provolone, mortadella, sopresatta, capicola, more olive spread and the top piece of bread.
One bite of this Muffuletta Sandwich and you’ll be whisked away to Bourbon Street.

I am so happy that I have extra olive spread stored in my fridge for when a muffuletta sandwich craving hits. From the bread, meat, cheese and the olive spread, it’s enough to send you into “Fat Tuesday” coma.
