This Apple and Plum Crumble is gorgeous, it’s simple and bursting with delicious fall fruit. The crumble topping brings it all together to create one magnificent dessert! Top it with vanilla ice cream for a real treat!
These Mixed Berry Crumble Bars are also a delicious crumbly dessert!
I mentioned on my last post, Caramel Apple Cheesecake Bars that my husband loves pie. This also goes for any type of pie, pastry, crumble, but Apple Crisp is his favorite. Or a good old fashioned apple pie.
I’m not a huge crumble fan. I know, shun me, but I’m more OK with it when it’s topped with ice cream.
Ask my husband and that’s a big no-no. Ice cream, crumbles and crisps should never be topped with ice cream, he says.
However, to me, if you have a warm dessert, it’s ALWAYS better topped with a little vanilla bean ice cream.
So what side are you on…. Team Ice cream or Team never? Either way this Apple and Plum Crumble is absolutely fabulous!
While I was in the store the other day, they had these plums that were calling my name, which are still in season until early October, so I figured I better stock up before they’re gone. 3lbs and this Apple Plum Crumble later and those plums are gone.
Besides the fact plums are a gorgeous color when baked, they pair with apples beautifully.
What is a fruit crumble without 1. delicious fruit and 2. and most importantly if you ask me the crumble itself.
This crumble is made with flour, brown sugar, Flahavan’s Irish Oatmeal, cardamom and butter just like the crust of the Caramel Apple Cheesecake Bars.
What is the difference between a crumble and a crisp?
“Like a crumble, a crisp is a baked fresh fruit dessert, but the streusel topping is less dense and typically includes oats.”
Therefore, this Apple and Plum dessert is a crumble because of the oats.
Now a cobbler is a whole other thing because it’s made with biscuits.
This Apple Plum dessert can be a crumble, crisp or cobbler.
I cut the apples and plums slightly on the large side because I like a hearty crumble and for the fruit to not completely break down into mush.
I added a punch of flavor to the apples and plums with Rodelle Kitchen Vanilla, another wonderful sponsor of ours for #AppleWeek.
Rodelle sent us a bottle of their Gourmet Pure Vanilla Extract and if you’re anything like me, you can’t keep a bottle of vanilla in your house especially when the weather breaks and we welcome holiday baking!
Another side note, please do not purchase imitation vanilla. Spend a couple extra dollars for the QUALITY GOOD stuff. It will make all the difference. {steps down from her Ina Garten soapbox}

COMMON QUESTIONS
- What kind of apples can I use?
- You can use whatever type of apple you like. However, if you are going to use something like a granny smith apple, remember they are tart, which could result in a tart crisp. You can also use a combination of a sweet + tart apple for a great balance of flavor.
- Can I sub in another fruit for the plums?
- Heck yes! You can use berries, cherries, pears, peaches or cranberries in place of the plums.
Plums go great with apples, but they also pair really well with other stone fruits such as peaches, nectarines and apricots. Berries are also good with plums including cherries, raspberries and strawberries.
