All the classic favorites of an Italian deli sandwich, Meats, cheese, peppers, lettuce and dressing all piled high on top of a baguette make this Chicago Style Hoagie Dip a new game day favorite!
It’s January, there is snow on the ground, people are grasping onto their NYE resolutions and enjoying a fresh new start to the year. I’m a fan of January. I set “goals” loosely, jump back into only have cookies for dessert and hit the treadmill, running. Afterall, we go to Wisconsin Dells so I have to rid the belly of the copious amounts of cookies, cakes and bars I consumed in the month of December so no one thinks who brought the whale to the pool.
I also love January, because it’s my birthday month. No, I’m not selfish and claim the whole month of my own, but I do LOVE my birthday. It’s the one day that’s all mine. It’s also the 1 day of the year I can get my husband to go bowling. We literally bowl once a year, in January. I love bowling. I mean what’s better than slamming down a few pins and a few beers with your most competitive friends?!
My husband has already asked the question, “what do you want for your birthday” and while I have a ton of wants, I don’t have a lot of needs. So, I’m trying to think of something really fun and exciting. Anyone got any ideas for me?
After January comes February. People are starting to loosen up on those goals and starting to prepare for the BIG football game and Valentine’s day. I love any excuse to just consume dips and dessert so both events are a win in my book. I like to start thinking about what foods I will be bringing to the party weeks in advance.
And I’ve got one word for you. Hoagie dip. This stuff is legit. I’m talking, I skipped the bread and just dove right in with my spoon. Ain’t no shame here. This Chicago Style Hoagie Dip features all the flavors you love of a Chicago style deli sandwich, chopped up into bite size pieces and served as a dip. And to be completely honest, it’s not a great dippable dip. It’s best accompanied with a spoon so you can pile it high on top of a piece of bread.
I couldn’t believe how much this Chicago Style Hoagie Dip reminded me of a sandwich shop my dad and I would frequent often when I was little. And yes, we lived about an hour from the “Windy City”, so I know a little bit about what is Chicago style. This my friends is so spot on. Instead of making a delicious sub, just chop up all of the ingredients and throw them into a bowl. No one cares how to eat food on game day, they just want to eat and fast.
I started by combining the classic deli meats of a Chicago Italian deli style hoagie sandwich; pancetta, mortadella, turkey and Genoa salami. You can also include ham, capicola and/or proscuitto. Then the cheese and it’s gotta be provolone to be authentic. Plus, provolone is delicious so just use it. Chop all of those into small pieces and place them into a bowl.
Next, chop up some lettuce and cherry tomatoes and add them to the bowl. Through in some sliced pepperoncinis and mix all to combine.
Then, to make the dressing which is super simple and so delicious, mix together some mayonnaise, olive oil, red wine vinegar and Italian seasoning. Pour over the contents in the bowl and gently mix to combine.
Hollow out a bread bowl and pile it on high! I made chucks out of the bread that I hollowed out from the bread bowl and served those alongside with additional pieces of French bread sliced and some hot giardiniera, because pickled veggies, yum!
