Has winter hit your area yet? It came in full force last week with temperatures dropping below zero. I need not remind you how much I loathe winter. Sure the first snowfall is super pretty but do I want to be out frolicking in it? Absolutely not. I will however, stay in the comfort of my warm home and make my children hot chocolate for when their frozen little bones come walking through the door. Thank Heavens for my husband last weekend because he went outside and built a snowman with them while I literally stood in the picture window and watched. #sorrynotsorry I was shocked when my kids spent over an hour outside. Usually they last about 10 minutes and then they are begging for hot chocolate and dry clothes.
The one thing I do like about the winter time is football and playoffs. Whether or not my team is in the playoffs, we still love to root for a great game and a great game was played this past Saturday between Philadelphia and Cincinnati. Woah baby, that was intense. Neither of them are our team but we love to pick a team before the game starts and see who wins. It’s a fun little thing we like to do being that our team isn’t in the playoffs. We’re looking forward to the second round of playoffs this weekend and I’m also looking forward to making this Chili Cheese Dog Crescent Ring.
I love game day food. Nachos, hot dogs, dips, chili, Slow cooker spicy pork carnitas, you name it, I love all the grubby food. So I was on a mission to find some food to whip up while we watched the games this weekend. I was perusing my magazines on a mission to find something really tasty and came across some chili cheese dogs. They look delicious but I wondered how I could make them more of a portable, finger food. Then my mind wandered to crescent dogs and then to a crescent ring. That’s how I usually figure out a recipe. I start with an idea and then it slowly branches off into my own little creation. Gotta love food and how it transforms and shapes into anything you want.
So, instead of making them into chili cheese dog crescents, if you make them into a ring, it’ll save you time so you aren’t having to individually wrapped each hot dog. What I really love about this recipe is I had all of the ingredients on hand. I always have at least 2 tubes of crescent roll dough in my fridge as we love to make pizza pinwheels, dunk them into soup or make them into mummy dogs. Hot dogs around this house are a no brainer with 2 small children and I also always have beans and cheese on hand. Therefore, this recipe came together in a snap.
I started by making the filling which consists of ground beef, onions, green pepper, tomatoes, beans and of course chopped hot dogs. Next I placed 2 rolls of crescents into a sun, as my daughter called it, making sure to overlap the dough. You can kind of see my triangles towards the center are all overlapping each other. This will ensure the filling stays in. Now mine isn’t the prettiest in the beginning stages but once everything was tucked, I think it came out pretty nicely. Next, I placed a circle of filling around the crescents and then topped with cheese. Now, taking each triangle corner that’s hanging over the side and place it up over the filling, tucking the corner under the bottom of the crescent dough. Place in the oven and in about 20 minutes you have Chili Cheese Dog Crescent Ring.
We devoured this, I mean in like record time. My kids absolutely loved it and that is always a big win in my book, especially with my 5-year-old who is a picky eater. The buttery crescent rolls paired with the hearty chili and sharp cheddar was so delicious. We served mustard and ketchup alongside because my kids love to dunk. I was so pleased with how well this turned out, I want to turn everything into a crescent ring. This ring could easily feed 16 people, if each person had 1 piece and that my friends would feed a hungry football crowd. We watched the playoff games with a piece of Chili Cheese Dog Crescent Ring in each hand.
Do you see that filling just cheesing over the sides? That is what a good chili cheese dog is made of, lots of cheese! You guys have to give this a try next time you are hosting the game at your house. Better yet, make it for dinner. Your family will love you for it. It’s an all American classic in a crescent roll, what’s not to love?! I love that this dish is a comfort meal perfect for cold, blustery winter nights when you aren’t sure what to cook and don’t want to leave the house to go to the store.
