Hands down my favorite pizza is a Margherita pizza. I adore fresh garden tomatoes, fresh mozzarella and fresh basil, especially in the summertime. We make flatbreads pizzas on the grill all summer long and this is always my recipe of choice.
We make them into long flatbreads that way we can each personalize our own pizza but we all use the same sauce.
But I don’t want to leave making flatbread pizzas to the summertime with fresh garden tomatoes and now you don’t have to. Thanks to Hunt’s San Marzano style tomatoes, which are picked at the peak of ripeness, and go from field to can within 8 hours, you can have this fresh and easy Easy Margherita Flatbread Recipe any day of the year!
I’m a firm believer in simple ingredients. When it comes to making a pasta sauce, if you use good quality tomatoes, you need nothing else to make your dish shine.

I snagged 2 cans while I was shopping at Walmart the other day, on the canned tomato aisle; one to make these flatbreads and another for spaghetti night.
WHAT IS MARGHERITA PIZZA?
Margherita pizza is made of 6 simple ingredients crust, San Marzano style tomatoes, mozzarella cheese, fresh basil, salt and extra-virgin olive oil.
I also rub garlic over the flatbread crust and add fresh pepper to the cheese, so my version is 7 ingredients but most of them are pantry staples.
INGREDIENTS FOR EASY MARGHERITA FLATBREAD RECIPE
- Family style pizza crust
- extra virgin olive oil
- garlic cloves
- Hunt’s San Marzano style tomatoes
- Fresh mozzarella cheese
- salt
- pepper
- Fresh basil
HOW TO MAKE MARGHERITA FLATBREAD
Roll out pizza dough onto a large sheet pan and cut down the middle to create 2 crusts. Brush with olive oil and bake in oven for 10 minutes to crisp up.
When the crust come out of the oven, slice a garlic clove in half and immediately rub all over the crusts.
Into a large bowl, add Hunt’s San Marzano style tomatoes and crush with your hands.
Place crushed tomatoes onto the pizza crust
Top with fresh mozzarella cheese slices, sprinkle with salt and pepper
Place into the oven and bake for 10 minutes until the crust is crispy.
Slice each flatbread into 8 slices and serve.
HOW CAN I MAKE GRILL MARGHERITA PLATBREAD PIZZA RECIPE?
Oil one side of the pizza dough. Place the pizza dough, oil side down, onto the grill over direct heat.
Brush the top side of the pizza dough with oil.
Cook the first side until lightly charred, about 1-2 minutes, and dough is stiff. Flip and cook 30 seconds to one minute.
I recommend watching closely as this can happen quickly.
HOW TO REHEAT FLATBREAD PIZZA?
Place a skillet over medium low heat and add a touch of oil. Add flatbread slice to skillet and reheat 2-3 minutes until crust is crispy again!
TIPS FOR MAKING FLATBREAD PIZZA
Use a good quality, family style pizza crust and cut it in half. It makes this recipe a snap to put together!
Use great quality tomatoes, such as San Marzano style tomatoes.

- 1 tablespoon extra virgin olive oil
- 2 garlic cloves, peeled and cut in half
- 28 oz Hunt's San Marzano style tomatoes
- 16 oz Fresh mozzarella cheese, sliced
- pinch of salt
- pinch of pepper
- .5oz Fresh basil
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.
- Roll out pizza dough onto a large sheet pan. Cut straight down the middle to create 2 crusts. Brush with olive oil and bake in oven for 10 minutes to crisp up.
- When the crust come out of the oven, slice a garlic clove in half and immediately rub all over the crusts.
- Into a large bowl, add Hunt's San Marzano style tomatoes and crush with your hands.
- Place crushed tomatoes onto the pizza crust
- Top with fresh mozzarella cheese slices, sprinkle with salt and pepper
