A spin on the traditional old fashioned, the addition of black walnut bitters draws out the warm, spicy flavors of the bourbon for a classy, sophisticated cocktail.
Here we are again at #ThirstyThursday guys and I couldn’t be more excited. It’s been a helluva week and I’m ready for the weekend! As I’ve said many times before, I love the holidays but they sure do kick my butt. I’ve got lots of things planned for the blog revolving around the holidays. They are dishes I’ve already eaten, photographed, uploaded but are yet to be scheduled. So ready, set, let’s get this holiday party started on the blog.
I thought it only appropriate to kick off the holiday season with a cocktail. I’m bringing it back old fashioned style. See what I did there? Anyways, I’m currently sitting on my couch, watching game 7 of the World Series, IN NOVEMBER, it was 70 degrees out today, so life is good. Oh and I’m sipping an old fashioned. It’s necessary to drink one while you’re writing about one, amiright?
I’ve gotta give it up to my sister who helped me craft this cocktail and also acted as my assistant for the shoot too. I wish she lived here so she could help me all the time. It was so lovely to have an extra pair of hands in the kitchen, eyes for the shoot and a lovely hand to hold this beauty. I always love that we were drinking bourbon at 11am on a Tuesday!
An old fashioned is a stiff drink. I can tell you I’ve never been to a bar and ordered one. To me, it’s one of those drinks that is best enjoyed at home, on the couch after it’s been a long, cold day, which is perfect for now, because we are on the brink of cold weather…I think. It’s been in the 70’s all this week and I ain’t even mad about it. If we could have this weather all year-long, I’d be so happy! But living in the Midwest this isn’t possible, so this old fashioned is just the ticket that’ll warm your soul.
Speaking of cold weather, I don’t like to be out in it. Winter is my nemesis and if I don’t have to be out freezing my tail off, that’s fine with me. I’ll hibernate in the house until the daisies come up in the Spring. So when I discovered Drizly, an online liquor store that delivers alcohol to your DOOR, I was over the moon!
Drizly partners with your local retailers to bring their inventory to your door. Simply download the app, or order on their website, browse the selection and alcohol, mixers and extras can be delivered in as little as 20 minutes (in most areas). Is that not like the coolest thing, since ever? Drizly is the biggest booze delivery service in the country, so let them bring the party to you! ?
They have all you need to whip up this Old Fashioned. Which is super simple by the way. You start by muddling sugar in the bottom of a rocks glass with an orange, a cherry and some bitters. In this case, I used black walnut bitters to add a little depth of flavor and a fall twist, but you can use regular bitters. Add some ice and top with bourbon. I used Bulleit Bourbon Whiskey, which is our favorite, but you can use whatever you have on hand or if you don’t have any, hook it up with Drizly, they’ve got your back.

A spin on the traditional old fashioned, the addition of black walnut bitters draws out the warm, spicy flavors of the bourbon for a classy, sophisticated cocktail.
Ingredients
- 1/2 teaspoon sugar
- 1 orange slice
- 1 Maraschino cherry
- 2 dashes of Bitters (I used Black Walnut Bitters)
- Ice Cubes
- 1/2 cup Bourbon, I recommend Bulleit™
- 1 orange and lemon slices and cherries for garnish
Instructions
*My rock glasses are 11.25 ounces each, hence why I used ½ cup bourbon. If your glasses are smaller, you may need less.

It’s really delicious and quite the sipper. It’s smooth but has a little bite. The perfect combination!
