As for today, I’m coming to you with another breakfast recipe but on the sweeter side. These Pear and Blue Cheese Scones are delicious and not dry and crumbly like you normally think of when you think of scones.
They’re moist, sweet, delicious and the perfect pair (pun intended!)
I had never had a scone before works at a coffee shop. To me, it wasn’t something that I wanted with breakfast. I’m usually more of a piece of banana bread or coffee cake kinda girl.
But when I started working at the coffee shop, it was our job to try everything on the menu so that we could accurately describe them to customers.
So, there I was sampling away the pastry case and onto the scones. My first bite of a cranberry orange scone and I was hooked. (I’ve got to recreate those) It was absolutely delicious and even better when paired with coffee.
I know a lot of times you see scones and think they are just dry pastries, but these Pear and Blue Cheese Scones are nothing like that.
To be honest, I was nervous making them because I have never made scones before and I didn’t want to end up with rock hard.
What I got was a delightfully moist and soft scone that is melt in your mouth delicious.
And please don’t run from the blue cheese. It works beautifully in these scones to give them a slight tang that pairs perfectly with the sweet pears.
If you’ve been scared of scones before, I am here to tell you that, you can do it. I am living proof with these Pear and Blue Cheese Scones that you can make bakery style scones at home and you will enjoy them!
Pear and Blue Cheese Scones
Yield 8 servings
Soft and sweet, with pillows of pear and rich blue cheese and a drizzle of honey, these Pear and Blue Cheese Scones are the perfect pair with your morning cup of coffee!
Ingredients
- 2 and 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
- 1/3 cup granulated sugar
- 1 tablespoon baking powder
- 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
- 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
- 1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 cup cold unsalted butter cut into pieces
- 4 ounces blue cheese
- 1 cup pears, diced
- 1 tablespoon vanilla bean paste
- 1 cup cold buttermilk
- 1 tablespoon heavy cream
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 400 degrees and line a baking sheet with a Silpat or parchment paper.
- In a large bowl mix flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, cinnamon, nutmeg and salt. Using a pastry cutter, 2 knives or your hands, cut the butter into the dry ingredients until they resemble small crumbs. Gently fold in the blue cheese and pears. Slowly add in the vanilla bean paste and buttermilk and stir just until the dough comes together (overworking will result in tough, dry scones)
- Turn out the dough onto a lightly floured surface and gently knead the dough a few times. Shape into a round disk. Cut into 8 triangles and arrange onto sheet pan. Brush the tops with heavy cream
- Bake for 13-15 minutes or until the tops are golden brown. Transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.

I drizzled my scones with a little bit of honey for extra sweetness but you could add jam or nothing at all. They’re sweet on their own.
What is your favorite type of scone? Mine still remains the cranberry orange scone which I will have to recreate and post the recipe but these pear and blue cheese scones are running up a very close second!
